Moving Ellerslie International Flower Show to South of NewZea Land

I found in an article that Ellerslie International Flower Show a popular flower show which is moving to other place.

A founding organiser of the Ellerslie International Flower Show is disappointed the event is moving south.

The show is leaving its home in Auckland, after Christchurch City Council bought the right to host it. The event will be hosted at Hagley Park in the centre of the city.

Former show employee Liz Morrow says she has been involved from the start and it is sad to see it go. She says it has always been an Auckland event and it is hard to imagine it anywhere else. Ms Morrow says she cannot work out why Auckland's councils would let it go, and wonders what effect a smaller event with lower visitor numbers would have on revenue.

Meanwhile, Auckland Regional Council is already turning its attention to setting up another Auckland-based gardening show. ARC Chairman Michael Lee says the city has the biggest market and by far the largest share of resources within the gardening industry...

Hand-pollinating flowers

How do you pollinate flowers yourself without hurting the flower?

There was an article published, which says that hand pollinating flowers is an easy task. Let's see how its done.

This in part depends upon how the flower is naturally pollinated. In many plants -- the ones that have larger and showier flowers -- the pollen is transferred by some animal pollinator. Depending upon the species of plants, these pollinators may be insects (bees, flies, butterflies, moths, beetles, etc.), birds or bats. However, many other plants, such as the grasses and many trees (e.g. pines), release their pollen to the wind, which then carries it to other flowers where pollination occurs. These plants generally have rather small drab flowers...Read More..

Pumpkin Roll on Thanksgiving Holiday

thanksgiving recipe.jpg Thanksgiving is family affair and in todayâ??s busy world it can be a bit stressful since few of us plan or cook meals for large families very often. If you are preparing to cook Thanksgiving dinner, there is a recipe helpful to make your meal a big hit with your family.

pumpkin pie.jpgA Recipe: A Pumpkin Roll

This is a great dessert, especially nice for holidays, but it can be served anytime of the year. The resulting pumpkin roll slices will impress your guests. The pumpkin roll is not as hard to make as it sounds. Be sure and use plain canned pumpkin, and not pumpkin pie mix.

Ingredients:

3 eggs, 1 cup white sugar, 2/3 cup solid pack pumpkin puree, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 1 cup chopped pecans, confectioners' sugar for dusting, 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, 4 tablespoons butter, 1 cup confectioners' sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, confectioners' sugar for dusting.

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10x15 inch jellyroll pan.

2. In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar with an electric mixer on high speed for five minutes. Gradually mix in pumpkin and lemon juice. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and ginger; stir into the pumpkin mixture. Spread batter evenly into the prepared pan. Sprinkle pecans over the top of the batter.

3. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the center springs back when touched. Loosen edges with a knife. Turn out on two dishtowels that have been dusted with confectioners' sugar. Roll up cake using towels, and let cool for about 20 minutes.

4. In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese, butter, 1 cup confectioners' sugar, and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Unroll pumpkin cake when cool, spread with filling, and roll up. Place pumpkin roll on a long sheet of waxed paper, and dust with confectioners' sugar. Wrap cake in waxed paper, and twist ends of waxed paper like a candy wrapper. Refrigerate overnight. Serve chilled; before slicing, dust with additional confectioners' sugar.

Wedding Crowns of Kolkata

I wanted to know the market place for flowers named Tuberose or Rajnigandha flowers in India. Then I saw an article giving some more details.

Come May, the streets of Calcuttaâ??s Mullickghat one of the oldest and busiest outdoor flower markets in the world lives to its full with Tuberose or Rajnigandha flowers.

We can see scores of men and boys stringing the flowers of tuberose (Rajniganda) into spectacular wedding accessories. These blooms, while not so large or shapely as other flowers, are gleaming white and renowned for holding their fragrance. The marrying couple exchange Tuberose garlands while giving vows during the marriage ceremony. Like the way others exchange rings.

Polianthes tuberosa is a welcome and omnipresent wedding guest, especially in Bengal. Bright and sweet, it appears in crowns and garlands, also in decorations for the coupleâ??s getaway car and even the marriage bed (Phul Shajya). Rajniganda translates as fragrance of the night.

The crowns are for the Brides from the Eastern Region of India. Most of the artisans are from the neighbouring state of Orissa, just south of West Bengal. They are traditional artists and able gardeners. Most of the florists who daily bring the flowers to the offices, shops, home, in Calcutta, are from Orissa.

Working side by side, they thread the blossoms into pearly ornaments exquisite pieces that sell, for Rs. 150 - 250 ($3.70 - $6.17 USD) apiece.

Dutch Flower Market

The other day, when I was going through a site regarding the Dutch flower market, I found the following facts, which i wanted to share with the flower community.

It was a surprise that the Netherlands Competition Authority ruled to allow the two giant Dutch flower auctionsâ??Aalsmeer and Florahollandâ??to join forces. The two auction houses have been combining their businesses for years now, and since each passing season brings yet another determined player to the table in this increasingly competitive market, the pressure has been on to shore up Hollandâ??s domination.

What did strike us as peculiar was the reasoning Nederlandse Mededingingsautoriteit (NMa) provided, that a merger between Floraholland and Aalsmeer â??would still leave â??sufficient alternative channelsâ?? on the domestic and foreign markets.â?? On the foreign markets, they may have a point, as Dubai, India and other countries are building up stronger auctions. But on the domestic side, PLEEZ! One source reports that a combined Aalsmeer and Floraholland will control 30% of the European market and 90% of the Dutch market.

If control over 90% of the market doesnâ??t constitute a monopoly, what does? 95%? 99.9%? Anti-trust laws are being ignored in many parts of the world (this is rampant in the U.S.) but to pretend that the combination of these two behemoths is not â??anti-competitiveâ?? within the Netherlands is a joke.

It seems to us that in a global economy, nations will be looking out for their traditional industries and bending national regulations in order to strengthen those industries abroad. Better, some in the Netherlands might say, to put up with a monopoly at home than risk losing our longstanding pre-eminence in the flower trade to China or some other comer. Isnâ??t this whatâ??s happening, a kind of economic jingoism? Weâ??d be interested to hear what our esteemed friends in the business world think, and of course weâ??ll be keeping an eye on the two-headed giant in Europe.

Okay, I want to leave them on my back deck against the house and then bring them in the house say...Dec. or so...does anyone know if they will bloom or not? with the warmth of the inside of my home? Should I water them while outside if I am going to bring them in?? Thanks so much. Cheryl
